CROWNS & BRIDGES
Crowns (also known as caps) are natural-looking covers that fit snugly over teeth to
conceal cracked, badly discolored, injured or chipped teeth. Crowns cover the entire
tooth, starting at the gum line and can minimize physical discomfort. Ultimately, crowns
can improve the overall appearance of your smile while making your teeth more
resistant to injury. Crowns are often used where large fillings (taking over one-third of
the tooth) may weaken that tooth over time. A crown could then be used to strengthen
the tooth preventing breakage. In such cases crowns are recommended to protect or
strengthen weakened teeth, or to restore a disfigured tooth to its original shape.
Tooth-colored bridges are often used when one or more teeth are missing. A bridge
consists of a replacement tooth that is attached to crowns on the adjacent teeth. The
replacement tooth is shaped to fit the contours of its adjacent teeth, and the bridge is
cemented to the teeth so it doesn't come off.
Tooth-colored crowns and bridges have the same aesthetic advantages as tooth-colored fillings, providing a strong, and aesthetically pleasing solution.
